Wix alternatives

Wix alternatives, and the one where you own the code

Wix alternatives fall into two groups, other website builders such as Squarespace and WordPress.com, and a site coded for your business and looked after every month by one developer. I sell the second option in two plans. Essential costs €1 at the order and then €39 a month, and it includes a site designed and coded for your business, hosting, daily backups, updates and your text and image changes delivered within 48 working hours. Visibility costs €1 at the order and then €79 a month and adds pages and articles written for Google and AI search every month. With both plans the code and the domain name are yours from day one.

01

What does Wix do well, and who is it for?

Wix lets you put a site online by yourself in an afternoon without writing a line of code. Its templates page says you can choose from 2000+ website templates, described as fully customizable, and the paid plans on its pricing page include hosting and a free domain for the first year. For a project that's just starting, a club, an idea you want to test, or a business without a budget yet, that's an honest answer to the need to exist online. You control every block, you publish when you want, and you don't wait for anyone to fix a typo in a heading.

The Wix pricing page, viewed on 27 August 2026 on the US site, shows four plans in dollars. Light at $19 a month, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159, billed yearly, with storage that grows with the plan. The French pricing page didn't display its prices when I checked, so I don't quote any euro figure for Wix. Wix hosts the site on its own servers and, according to its help center, monitors security around the clock and serves pages from a network of servers close to your visitors. To compare with my plans, the two plans and their prices display in your currency.

Wix suits people who enjoy doing it themselves and have time to give their site. A photographer who swaps galleries every week, a sports club that posts its season schedule, a holiday rental that updates its calendar, a tradesman who first wants to check that anyone searches for him online before spending more. The builder rewards people who come back to the editor often. If your site takes you an hour a month without annoying you and your customers find you, stay on it, and you'll read further down when the move to a coded site pays for itself. For the other big name in the field, Wix compared with WordPress goes through the differences in how they work and what they cost.

02

Where does Wix reach its limits for a business?

A Wix site can't leave Wix, and the Wix help center says so in so many words. Your site is built with Wix's technology and, to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers. You can connect a domain bought elsewhere, which I recommend in my guide to domain names, but the pages and the layout stay inside the editor. The day you want to leave, you copy your texts and images by hand and rebuild everything else. That's the Wix business model, and you should know it before you build ten years of trade on top of it.

A template that anyone can pick is used by many other sites, and nothing stops a competitor in your town from starting with the same one. The structure fixes the order of the blocks and the height of the banner, and your texts go into boxes designed for a generic business. You can change everything, the Wix page says so, but every change takes time and often breaks the layout on phones. A site coded for your business starts from your services and your customers, and no two of my clients get the same site.

Page speed depends on what the page carries. A site built inside an online editor loads the editor's code, the scripts shared by every site on the platform and each app added from the app market before your first heading appears. Wix says it serves pages from servers close to your visitors, which helps delivery but doesn't reduce what the phone then has to read and run. A site coded for you contains only what your pages need. Before going live, every site I deliver passes a check on speed, accessibility and technical SEO, and I show you the results rather than promise them.

The full cost of a Wix site is the subscription plus your hours. The Core plan at $29 a month comes to $1044 over three years at the displayed price, before paid apps and before the time you spend in the editor each time a page has to change. My Essential plan costs €1,405 over the same period, and that amount covers design, code, hosting, backups, updates and your changes delivered within 48 working hours. On subscription alone Wix stays cheaper, and the difference pays for the work you no longer do. If your time has a value for your business, run the numbers with your hourly rate and read what a cheap website really costs.

03

Which Wix alternatives should you compare before choosing?

Squarespace is the other builder people mention to me most often. Its French pricing page, viewed on 27 August 2026, shows Basic at 14 € a month on monthly billing or 108 € a year, Core at 20 € a month or 168 € a year, and Advanced at 30 € a month or 252 € a year. The templates are more polished than average, in my view, and the editor gives you less freedom than Wix, which also means fewer broken layouts. Its help page on exporting says the export file covers pages and one blog, but not style settings or custom CSS. I go into more detail on my Squarespace alternatives page.

The hosted version of WordPress is called WordPress.com, and it's easy to confuse with the free software you install at a hosting company. Its pricing page, viewed from Switzerland on 27 August 2026, shows prices in Swiss francs billed yearly, with a first year price and then a renewal price. Personnel at 5 CHF the first year a month, Premium at 10 CHF the first year, Business at 30 CHF the first year and Commerce at 54 CHF the first year. Its export guide explains that the file contains posts, pages and comments, but not the theme design, customizations or plugins. You gain flexibility, and you inherit the updates that come with it.

The third option is a site coded for your business and looked after every month by the same person. I design the pages from your services and your customers, I code them without a template or a builder, I host them, I watch security, I back them up every day and I deliver your text and image changes within 48 working hours. The code belongs to you from day one, the domain is registered in your name, and you can ask for a full export of the site at any time, even during the commitment, free of charge. The full mechanics are on my website subscription page. The table below puts the three routes side by side.

05 The plans

What does the coded alternative to Wix cost each month?

01 Essential

Essential

The website, the hosting and the updates, with nothing else to manage on your side.

  • A unique website, designed and coded for your business
  • Hosting, daily backups and security monitoring
  • Technical fixes and updates included in the plan
  • Text and image changes delivered within 48 working hours
  • Monthly report on traffic and uptime

That is €469 excluding tax for the first year, then €39 a month, cancellable any month with one month's notice.

Choose Essential
02 Visibility Most complete

Visibility

Everything in Essential, plus the content that puts your site on your trade's keywords and brings you customers.

€1

at the order

then €79 a month

  • Everything in the Essential plan
  • 4 pages and 4 articles a month, written on verified keywords for Google and AI search engines
  • Each page targets one more keyword, so after a year your site answers close to a hundred searches in your trade
  • Monthly report on your positions for local searches

That is €949 excluding tax for the first year, then €79 a month, cancellable any month with one month's notice.

Choose Visibility

Monthly plan excluding tax, 12 months minimum, then cancellable with one month's notice. The domain name and the source code belong to you from day one, with a full export of the site within 15 days on request, free of charge, even during the commitment.

Card payment, secured by Stripe. You pay the order and the first monthly payment, then each monthly payment is charged on the same date. Would you rather get a quote and talk first? Write to me.

04

When should you stay on Wix, and when should you move?

Stay on Wix if your site costs you little time and brings you what you expect from it. A $19 a month plan for a presentation page that changes twice a year, with customers who mostly arrive by word of mouth, doesn't justify a change. Stay too if you sincerely enjoy building your pages, if you have time to follow the editor's new features and if no function is missing. Changing sites has a cost in attention even when someone else does the work, and I'd rather tell you that than sell you a plan you don't need.

Move to a coded site when one of these signs shows up. You've been putting off an update for months because the editor wears you down. Your pages load slowly on phones and you don't know what to remove. You need one page per service or per town to be found on Google, and the template doesn't lend itself to that. Or simply, your business has grown and the site still looks like a first attempt. At that point the Essential plan at €39 a month replaces the subscription and your hours, and the Visibility plan adds pages and articles written on verified keywords every month.

The migration happens without cutting your current site. I read your Wix site, I collect your texts and images, since Wix doesn't export the layout, and I rebuild each page with a structure designed for your business. You receive a complete first version to review, we adjust, then we go live after your approval, less than 48 hours after the order. If the domain was bought at Wix, the Wix help center describes how to transfer it to another registrar, and I handle it with you. If it sits with another provider, I simply change where it points. In both cases it's in your name, and your Wix subscription ends once the new site is live.

06 The price

Why this price does not lower the quality

The price comes from how the site is built and maintained, not from a sacrifice on the design or the code.

01

A site designed and coded, not a template

No purchased theme, no page builder. The layout, the copy and the code are written for your business, after research on what your competitors do and on what your customers type into Google. Two clients never receive the same site.

02

Performance and security are measured

Before going live, every site passes a check on speed, accessibility and technical SEO, and it does not ship until the score is where it should be. A fast, clean site costs less to host and maintain, and that saving is in the price.

03

Automation pays the difference

Hosting, backups, monitoring and the monthly report are automated, and I have spent sixteen years building this kind of tooling. Human time goes to the design, the copy and your change requests, not to the repetitive tasks others bill you for every month.

04

No financing, no hidden clause

You pay €1 or €1 at the order, then a monthly plan for twelve months, with no credit company and no lease contract. The first year total sits at the top of the quote, and the domain and the code stay yours, with an export of the site within 15 days on request.

07

What questions come up about Wix alternatives?

Which Wix alternative should a small business choose?

It depends on who does the work. If you want to keep building by yourself, Squarespace and WordPress.com are the two builders I compare on this page. If you want one person to design, code, host and update your site, my Essential plan at €39 a month after €1 at the order is built for that, with the code and the domain in your name.

Can you export a Wix site to another host?

The Wix help center states that the site is built with Wix's technology and has to be hosted on Wix's servers to work. So there's no export of the layout itself. You can copy your texts and download your images, which is what I do at the start of every migration, and the site is then rebuilt page by page with a structure that belongs to you.

How much does a Wix alternative coded for me cost a month?

Essential costs €1 at the order then €39 a month excluding tax, €469 for the first year, and includes the site, hosting, backups, security, updates and your changes. Visibility costs €1 at the order then €79 a month, €949 for the first year, and adds pages and articles every month. An online shop or a client area gets a separate quote.

What happens to a domain name bought at Wix?

It stays yours in every case. The Wix help center describes the steps to transfer a domain bought at Wix to another provider, and I take care of it with you during the migration. Once transferred it's registered in your name and points to the new site. If the domain already sits with another provider, changing its destination is enough, with no visible interruption for your visitors.

How long does moving from Wix to a coded site take?

Count less than 48 hours between the order and going live, depending on how fast you review the first version. Your Wix site stays online during the whole build, so you don't lose a single day of visibility. The domain switch happens last, once you've approved every page, and the old subscription can be cancelled afterwards.

What happens to my site if I stop the plan after a year?

You leave with the complete site, code included. The plan runs twelve months minimum, then can be cancelled any month with one month's notice. The code has belonged to you since day one and the domain is in your name, so I hand you the full export of the site within fifteen days, free of charge, and you install it at the host of your choice or give it to another developer.

08 Compare before you sign

A site coded for you, at the price of a kit site

  • 01 The code and the domain name are yours from day one, with an export of the site within 15 days
  • 02 No WordPress and no page builder, every page is designed and written for your business
  • 03 Speed, accessibility and technical SEO are measured before the site goes live

Among the French offers under 100 € a month we reviewed in August 2026, none displayed these three commitments together.
